Managing IP Failover Groups

From ProfitBricks Online Help
Jump to: navigation, search

The Profitbricks IP failover feature helps to minimize packet loss for high availability or failover setups in the event that one of the virtual machines experiences an outage. By setting up IP failover groups, you can define the virtual servers that are part of your high availability setup.

Contents

Pre-requisites

  • The LAN for which you want to create an IP failover group:
    • Has to be public (i. e. it needs to be connected to the internet),
    • Is not load balanced.
  • At least one reserved public IP address is available.
  • You have the following permissions:
    • Edit data center,
    • Access the IP address to be used for the IP failover group, and/or
    • Reserve IP blocks.

Creating an IP-Failover Group

In order to create an IP-failover group, do the following:

  • Open an existing virtual data center.
or
  • Create a new virtual data center.
  • Select the LAN on which you intend to create an IP failover group.
  • Open the IP Failover tab in the Inspector.

  • Click on Create Failover Group.
The Set up IP Failover dialog box opens:

  • From the drop-down menu, select the IP address for the new IP failover group.
  • Add group members (NICs) by selecting their checkboxes.
  • Confirm your changes by clicking Create Failover Group.
  • (Optional) Make further changes to your virtual data center.
  • Provision your changes.

The IP failover group has been created.

Note: Please ensure that a high availability setup has been configured on your virtual machines (including the traffic management between VMs in case of an outage). Setting up an IP failover group in DCD alone does not implement high availability.

Modifying or Deleting an IP-Failover Group

Change the Master of an IP-Failover Group

On initial provisioning, the master of an IP failover group needs to be identical with the master of the HA setup on your virtual machines. When the master of your HA setup changes hereafter, you don't have to update the master of the IP failover group necessarily.

  • In the IP Failover tab, click on Manage NICs.
The Manage NICs in Failover Group dialog box opens:

  • Select the new master by selecting the corresponding radio button.
  • Confirm your change by clicking Update Failover Group.
  • (Optional) Make further changes to your virtual data center.
  • Provision your changes.

The master of the selected IP-failover group has been changed.

Change or Delete Members of an IP-Failover Group

  • In the IP Failover tab of the Inspector, click on Manage NICs.
The Manage NICs in Failover Group dialog box opens:
Ip-failover-dlg-manage-nics-EN.png
  • Add or remove group members (NICs) by selecting or de-selecting their respective checkboxes.
  • Confirm your changes by clicking on Update Failover Group.
  • (Optional) Make further changes to your virtual data center.
  • Provision your changes.

Members have been added or removed from the selected IP-failover group.

Change the IP Address of an IP-Failover Group

The Change IP of Failover Group dialog box opens:
Ip-failover-dlg-manage-nics-EN.png
  • Select the new IP address from the drop-down menu.
  • Confirm by clicking on Change IP.
  • (Optional) Make further changes to your virtual data center.
  • Provision your changes.

The existing IP address of the selected IP failover group has been removed from its NICs. The new IP address has been assigned to all members of the selected IP failover group.

Delete an IP-Failover Group

  • In the IP Failover tab, click on Remove Failover Group.
The Remove Failover Group dialog box opens.
  • Confirm by clicking on OK.
  • (Optional) Make further changes to your virtual data center.
  • Provision your changes.

The selected IP failover group has been deleted.
