Backup Availibility
How can I create backups/snapshots from my Virtual Data Center?

You can use any snapshot or backup process that your operating system supports, just like in a real data center.

Data Center Designer
How can I connect to my server from the Data Center Designer?

With the DCD, you can easily open a remote console to your virtual machine. Since it's a java applet, we recommend using the official java plugin from Oracle.

Images
Which kind of images are supported for import?

bochs, cow, parallels, qcow, qcow2, qed, raw, sheepdog, vdi, vmdk, vpc

Images
After duplicating a server/storage, why are there no longer any images attached or OS installed?

In this case, the option "duplicate" means "copy" and not "clone". Thus, basic settings like Cores and RAM size will be maintained, but images must be reassigned and/or reinstalled.

Images
Which images support Live Vertical Scaling?

At the moment, LVS is supported by Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and CentOS images, and we are working to add more. Please refer to the term "LVS" in the image name to identify LVS enabled images.

Load Balancer
I have two servers connected through a Load Balancer, and they can't access each other.

Both servers connected to the Load Balancer are assigned the same IP address. To manage both servers quickly, we recommend an internal management network. We have provided a how-to in our Online Help.

Load Balancer
How does the Load Balancer work?

Our Load Balancer works with the Round Robin technology. Based on source address, sessions are directed to one of the backend servers.

Load Balancer
Do I have to pay for the usage of a firewall or a load balancer?

Use of our firewall and load balancer is free of charge.

Migration
What are Availability Zones?

Each ProfitBricks datacenter contains two Availability Zones.  Availability Zones are physically separate areas of the datacenter, divided by a fire-code rated partition. Each zone is serviced by separate power, cooling, and network infrastructure.  This segregation ensures maximum reliability for your applications.

When you create a storage volume, you automatically take advantage of multiple Availability Zones, as our block volumes are distributed between two Zones in a RAID10 mirror.  When you create servers, you can select which Availability Zone your server is placed in using Data Center Designer, or allow a Zone to be selected automatically.

Migration
What operating systems are available as ProfitBricks pre-defined system images?

The list of current images is updated regularly.  To see the current list, follow these steps:

1.    Open Data Center Designer, and select new HDD Storage.
2.    In the Properties window, select “Set Image/Snapshot Here”, then “Default Images by ProfitBricks”

Migration
How can I copy files to my new Linux virtual server?

There are many methods available, but we find most customers prefer to use rsync over ssh.  rsync and ssh are pre-installed on most Linux distributions.

In our example, we will copy files from legacy-server, in the directory /var/www, to new-server in the same directory.  The process is as simple as one command:

old-server:~admin# rsync -avz -e ssh /var/www new-server:/var/www

rsync copies files incrementally – that is, if you run the above command, then change files on old-server, and repeat the command, only changed files will be copied.  We strongly recommend using this incremental copy functionality in your server migration planning, as outlined in our Migration Whitepaper.

Network
How do I get the IP address of a newly created server, e.g. to access it by RDP or SSH?

You can find your IP address in the confirmation email you get after creating a virtual machine. Alternatively, select the server in the DCD; you can see its IP address in the Inspect pane under Network Devices.

Network
How can I connect via Remote Console applet?

To ensure that your remote console will work properly, you need the newest version of Oracle Java, and the ports 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS) and 5900 (VNC) have to be forwarded. Your remote console will be available after provisioning the server you want to access.

Network
How do I create reverse DNS entries?

Please contact ProfitBricks Support. They will handle the request ASAP.

Network
Can I see detailed traffic statistics (separately listed by protocol or IP)?

No, but soon.

Network
What if a DHCP configuration fails during the Linux installation process?

For DHCP IP assignment of public IP adresses, we assign a network mask 255.255.255.255. Some DHCP client implementations do not support this. You can either set the network configutration at OS-level with a config file or else assign a netmask of 255.255.255.0 with a config file.

Network
How can I set up a firewall?

You can activate a firewall for each NIC in the server properties. After activating, all incoming requests are blocked by default. Select "Add Firewall Rule" to define which data packets you want to be allowed to pass and which are to be blocked. The firewall is only valid for incoming traffic to your server.

Network
How can I buy additional IP addresses for a server?

You can purchase and return additional IP addresses through the DCD's IP manager. Acquired IP addresses come in blocks as a contiguous IP range. You can then assign one or more of these IP addresses to any server connected to the Internet by choosing the Inspector option "More IPs / Assign IP to NIC." For more detailed information, see the how-to in our Online Help.

Network
How can I connect several servers with the Internet?

Our public access cloud is able to handle more than one server. Drag the connection from any or all virtua l machines onto the public access NIC.

Network
What are Availablility Zones?

There are two different physical locations within in our data center. Availaibility Zones allow you to use the different locations as an additional security layer.

Network
Will the costs be charged per 'gigabyte' or 'partial gigabyte'?

We calculate the charges per byte, and round to the nearest US cent.

Network
What kind of data/data packets/frames (actual volume of data transferred) are being used for charging/billing?

We count layer-2 (ethernet) frames on the physical data center gateway.

Network
How much is one GB - is it 1024 MB or 1000 MB?

1 KB is 1024 byte, 1 MB is 104 KB, one GB is 1024 MB, and so on.

Network
If my server/data center communicates via a public IP address, does it count as internal or external traffic?

You only pay for traffic leaving or entering our physical data center. All internal traffic is free of charge. Communication between two different virtual machines located in the same region counts as internal traffic.

Network
Do I have to pay for internal LAN traffic as well?

You only pay for in- or outbound traffic passing our physical gateways. All internal traffic is free of charge.

Network
How is my Data Center protected against hardware defects?

All our storage systems provide a high level of internal redundancy for all hardware components. Storage volume is also synchronously replicated to a second storage server. All communication links and devices have at least single redundancy. If a physical server with a customer VM fails, this VM will restart on a different physical server.

Network
Tell me about data center availability.

The availability of our data center is 99.95%, with a maximum of 4 hours of maintenance per quarter.

Security Compliance
I forgot my password! How do I reset it?

There is a link to reset your password on the login screen.

Server
How do I delete a server?

You can delete servers quickly using the DCD. Select the server and click the Delete button in the Inspect pane. A virtual machine cannot be restored once it has been deleted!

Server
Why is it not possible to use the option "Reset" in the server properties?

The Option "Reset" is only available, while a data center is active after it has been deployed at least once.

Server
How can I reboot a server?

Either use an operating system level tool (reboot command), or click the Reset button in the DCD. The reset button performs a hard reset, just like the reset button on a physical machine.

Server
Where do I get a root/administrator password to access images that are provided by ProfitBricks?

We will send the password for our provided images to your contact email address. You must change this password on your first login.

Server
After duplicating a server/storage, why are there no longer any images attached or OS installed?

Duplicate an Item (Storage or Server) does make a copy of the Configuration Settings (Size, RAM, Cores) to create a similar Item. It does not clone the content of the Item.

Server
I have selected a zone in the server properties, how can I change this zone back?

You can only change the high availability zone if the data center hasn't been provisioned yet. Once the data center is set and deployed, the zone cannot be changed anymore.

Server
Can I shut down a server to avoid provisioning costs without having to delete it from the data center?

Yes!

Server
How can I stop a server?

You can stop a server through its operating system (using shutdown command or the graphic user interface). The server will still be provisioned in the virtual data center. To restart the server through the DCD, select the server and use the "Reset" button in the Inspect pane.

Storage
Can I connect a storage to multiple servers?

No. However, you can use any network connection between servers without any performance loss.

Storage
What is Live Vertical Scaling (LVS)?

Live Vertical Scaling is a technology that allows you to add more CPU cores and RAM during operation, without having to restart.

Storage
How can I create backups/snapshots from my Virtual Data Center?

You can use any snapshot or backup process that your operating system supports, just like in a real data center.

Storage
How is my Data Center protected against hardware defects?

All our storage systems provide a high level of internal redundancy for all hardware components. Storage volume is also synchronously replicated to a second storage server. All communication links and devices have at least single redundancy. If a physical server with a customer VM fails, this VM will restart on a different physical server.
